Liverpool Pupils Join Together in Fight against Air Pollution
Pupils from twelve schools in Liverpool joined together to hold the Let’s Clear the Air virtual conference in July 2021. The conference was also attended by representatives and speakers from Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the British Lung Foundation and the RSK Group. The conference was the culmination of an air quality project that has taken over a year’s hard work by the pupils during very challenging times.
The air quality project was supported by Schools Improvement Liverpool and Liverpool City Council, who provided technical and financial assistance to allow the pupils and their teachers to monitor the levels of air pollution in their schools. The pupils learnt about the causes of air pollution and what can be done to improve it. The pupils then used this information to create posters, leaflets and videos to encourage people to change their behaviour and make greener travel choices. At the conference the pupils shared what they had learned with the delegates in a range of exciting and thought-provoking videos and presentations.
A teacher from St Paul & St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School said: “This project has been so valuable to our school and our families. We have all worked so hard to ensure children understand the importance of air pollution for children’s health.”
A pupil from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School said: “I have really enjoyed changing the diffusion tubes and looking at the results to see if the air is getting cleaner”
A teacher from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School said “It has been an absolute pleasure for our children to learn about and investigate the air quality in their own locality. They have developed a passion for developing a cleaner and healthier environment for us all. They have particularly enjoyed campaigning for change in our school community.”
